On January 29, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Linh Phung for an insightful session on text-based and task-based approaches to materials development and language instruction.
Dr. Linh highlighted the challenges of achieving advanced language proficiency and emphasized the importance of input, output, interaction, motivation, and engagement in language learning. She introduced text-driven materials development and task-based language teaching (TBLT), sharing practical activities like jigsaw reading, picture sequencing, and decision-making tasks to enhance communication and language proficiency.

Webinar Highlights: Lifting Poetry Off the Page
On January 11, 2025, TESOL Kurdistan and TESOL-SPAIN successfully launched the first session in their collaborative webinar series, titled “Lifting Poetry Off the Page: Engaging Students Through Verse.” Led by Annie Altamirano, TESOL-SPAIN Liaison Officer, the webinar brought together more than 60 educators from different countries, eager to explore innovative teaching strategies.
The session highlighted the use of poetry as a powerful tool to connect students with language, culture, and social issues. The discussion focused on themes such as identity, migration, and empathy, with creative strategies including found poetry, dramatization, and visual representation. Participants left with practical methods to enhance their students’ critical thinking, creativity, and emotional engagement through poetry.
Our dedicated instructors from Kirkuk, representing Kurdistan TESOL Association, recently conducted a two-day training. We were delighted to engage with the bright and enthusiastic teachers of Kirkuk, from kindergarten to 12th grade across both government and private schools. We wish them every success on their future journeys!

On 15 October, Dr. Marwan Abdi, Head of the English Department at the College of Languages, moderated a seminar featuring Ms. Jihan Brifki, Executive Director of HANASA PLUS, a US-based NGO. The seminar brought together two esteemed members of Kurdistan TESOL Mr. Naser Khaled and Ms. Nareen Nawfel alongside Ms. Brifki, fostering a dynamic discussion on key educational and environmental initiatives in USA and in the region. This event marks another step forward in strengthening ties between local and international organizations committed to advancing education and sustainable development in Kurdistan.
TESOL KURDISTAN - TESOL UKRAINE
On October 9, 2024, we engaged in a highly productive online meeting with our esteemed future collaborator, TESOL Ukraine. During this meeting, we delved into the background of our prospective collaboration, focusing on key areas such as the exchange of designations for international TESOL events, mutual publications, and the expansion of our networks through shared efforts.
As a significant stride in our collaborative journey, we are excited to announce the forthcoming webinar hosted by TESOL Ukraine, scheduled for tomorrow, October 10, 2024. This webinar promises valuable insights and discussions pertinent to our shared interests.
On the final day of the workshop, participants focused on lesson planning , critical thinking and the integration of AI in EFL settings. Sessions were presented by Dr Himdad Mohammed, Dr. Marwan Abdi and Mr. Mustafa Mohammad;; the day concluded with a graduation ceremony.
Members from our Association met with the education team from Norwegian refugee Council (NRC) to discuss the upcoming training workshops for English instructors and supervisors affiliated with the General Directorate of Education in Zakho.
